“SELF-ESTEEM” by The Offspring

from:

“Self-Esteem” by The Offspring is the second single released from the 1994 hit album appropriately named “Smash”. This album, considered by many to be the band’s greatest achievement has sold eight million copies and has set the record for the higest sales form an independent label. “Smash” is produced by Epitaph Records owned by Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz.

However, this was not the band’s first album. It is believed that their first recorded album was "The Offspring" produced by Thom Wilson in 1989. Followed by “Ignition” which was released by Epitaph Records in 1991. This was shortly followed by a tour that covered the span of two years. The band from Orange County, California went on tour with bigger-named artists such as No Doubt, Pennywise and Voodoo Glow Skulls.

The album’s success is primarily attirbuted to the hit singles “Gotta Get Away”, “Self-Esteem” and “Come Out and Play”.

The band is led by Bryan “Dexter” Holland on vocals and rhythm guitar, Greg Kriesel or Greg K on bass guitar, Kevin Wasserman or “Noodle” on lead guitar and Atom Willard on drums. They are primarily considered a punk rock or alternative rock group and cites their main influences as Bad Religion, Social Distortion, TSOL and Circle Jerks.

“Self Esteem” by The Offspring’s success may have been brought about by its straight and uncomplicated words, both served as a means to get the thought across in a direct manner.

It speaks of holding on to a dysfunctional relationship and being fully aware that one is being used but at the same time, the abused partner is weakened by a low self-esteem that effectively traps him in that relationship.

The lyrics of the song is as follows:

SELF-ESTEEM (By: “The Offspring”)

I wrote her off for the tenth time today

And practice all the things I would say

But she came over

I lost my nerve

I took her back and made her dessert

Now I know I’m being used

That’s okay man cause I like the abuse

I know she’s playing with me

That’s okay cause I got no self esteem

We make plans to go out at night

I wait till 2 then I turn out the light

All this rejection’s got me so low

If she keeps it up I just might tell her no

Chorus

When she’s saying that she wants only me

Then I wonder why she sleeps with my friends

When she’s saying that I’m like a disease

Then I wonder how much more I can spend

Well I guess I should speak up for myself

But I really think it’s better this way

The more you suffer

The more it shows you really care

Right? yeah yeah yeah

Now I’ll relate this little bit

That happens more than I’d like to admit

Late at night she knocks on my door

Drunk again and looking to score

Now I know I should say no

But that’s kind of hard when she’s ready to go

I may be dumb

But I’m not a dweeb

I’m just a sucker with no self esteem
